The Rotary Club of Bonita Springs in conjunction with Rotary International District 6960 has donated $100,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties’ Disaster Recovery Repair (DRP) program. The Rotary Club Bonita Springs raised $50,000, and the Rotary District 6960 Foundation provided a matching $50,000. These funds, along with others already donated by seven Rotary clubs in Lee County, will help Habitat’s Disaster Recovery Program to assist over 25 Lee County residents who own their home with repairs because of damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Along with their generous financial gift, Rotarians will volunteer on a variety of Habitat’s DRP projects.

Rotarians responded immediately after Hurricane Irma, helping Bonita Springs residents muck and gut their homes. Recognizing there is still a great need to assist families whose home suffered damage from Irma, Rotary District 6960, which encompasses clubs from Manatee County to Marco Island, is responsible for funding over $160,000 to Habitat’s Disaster Recovery Program to aid Habitat in completing over 40 repairs and have volunteered on several DRP projects.

“Rotarians are people of action,” says Rotary District 6960 Governor Sandra Hemstead. “We are proud to be able to partner with Habitat for Humanity in both the volunteer and financial capacity, and our Rotary clubs will help see the relief efforts for local residents through to the end.”

Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties launched their Disaster Recovery Program after Hurricane Irma as the long-term solution to damage caused by a natural disaster. Since the program’s start, Habitat has partnered with over 40 homeowners to complete repairs, and currently, has 26 homes in the process of being repaired. Habitat receives about 10 new inquiries for the Disaster Recovery Program every week.

Basic requirements for Habitat’s Disaster Recovery Program for Lee and Hendry County residents are they must own the home where the repairs are to be made; occupy the home as their primary residence; and have a household income below 80% of the Area Median Income (Veterans 100%).
